RF Microneedling combines traditional microneedling with radiofrequency (RF) energy to improve skin laxity, texture, fine lines, wrinkles, scarring, and overall skin quality. Unlike traditional microneedling alone, RF microneedling delivers controlled heat beneath the surface of the skin, allowing us to target the deeper layers where collagen and elastin are produced.
During treatment, very small needles create controlled microchannels in the skin while simultaneously delivering radiofrequency energy into the deeper dermal tissue. This creates two complementary responses:
Microneedling stimulates the skin's natural healing process. The controlled micro-injuries signal the body to repair and remodel the treated tissue, encouraging the production of new collagen and elastin.
Radiofrequency energy adds controlled heat beneath the skin. This thermal energy causes existing collagen fibers to contract while stimulating fibroblasts and encouraging continued production and remodeling of collagen and elastin.
The result is gradual remodeling of the skin from within. Because collagen production takes time, improvement continues well beyond the initial treatment and may progress for several months.
Significant weight loss can create an entirely new concern: loose or lax skin.
When the body carries additional weight, the skin stretches to accommodate the increased volume underneath it. After substantial or rapid weight loss, that volume decreases, but the skin does not always completely contract with it. Changes in the skin's collagen and elastin support, along with repeated expansion and contraction from changes in underlying fat volume, can contribute to laxity.
This may be especially noticeable on areas such as the:
For patients who have worked hard to lose a significant amount of weight, loose skin can sometimes make it difficult to fully appreciate the changes in their body.
RF microneedling can be an excellent nonsurgical option for improving mild to moderate skin laxity following weight loss. By creating controlled micro-injuries and delivering RF energy beneath the skin, treatment stimulates new collagen and elastin and promotes tissue remodeling. Over time, this can help the treated skin appear firmer, smoother and more supported.
RF microneedling has specifically been studied for skin laxity associated with significant weight loss. Published clinical evidence has reported improvement in laxity following treatment, although RF microneedling should not be expected to produce the same degree of correction as surgical removal of significant excess skin.
RF microneedling is a versatile treatment that may help improve:
Research supports RF microneedling's ability to improve skin laxity and photoaging through collagen remodeling, with studies demonstrating changes in collagen and elastin within treated skin.
RF microneedling isn't limited to the face. Depending on your individual concerns and treatment plan, it can be used on multiple areas of the face and body, including the face, jawline, neck, décolletage, abdomen, arms and thighs. This makes it particularly useful for patients who have lost weight and are looking for a nonsurgical way to improve the quality and firmness of skin in specific problem areas.
Some patients notice changes in the firmness or texture of their skin relatively early, but RF microneedling is designed to create progressive improvement rather than an overnight transformation. As the body produces and remodels collagen and elastin, the skin can continue to improve over the following weeks and months. Research has shown that dermal remodeling following RF microneedling can continue for as long as six months after treatment.A series of treatments may be recommended depending on the treatment area, degree of laxity, skin condition and individual goals.
RF microneedling is minimally invasive, so downtime is generally much shorter than surgical skin-tightening procedures. Temporary redness, swelling, tenderness or pinpoint marks can occur following treatment. These effects typically improve as the skin heals. Clinical reviews have found the most commonly reported effects to be temporary redness, swelling and discomfort.
